C64/128 Games:
Here are a selection of games for downloading. If you've been here previously,
you'll find that the mini-archive has been taken down, and replaced with
either demos, or games which can be distributed freely, this is all because
of the current situation with the Interactive
Digital Software Association, who strongly believe, that the distribution
of these old titles, is just as bad as copying current software on the
shelf.
As more titles can be authorised for this form of distribution, I'll
try to put them up here. In addition, if you have any good PD, or freeware
games or are an author of any titles (and are willing to give permission),
please mail them to me.
All of the games here have been tested on CCS64 (1.09 and the betas),
and work correctly, and any C128 titles have been tested with VICE 0.16.0
and 1.0.
I'll give a quick summary of what the game is about, plus give my own
rating to each one as well. All the games have been PKzipped, although,
if you wish to use these on another platform, you can grab ZIP compliant
decompressers from here,
while Windows users can use the WinZIP
utility.
Here are the Games & Demos, Enjoy!

In a tribute to the classic 70's black-and-white racing games [which
were a precursor of sorts to the immortal Super Sprint], this fun game,
has you racing over 8 tracks, and when compared to more contemporary titles,
this is much harder, with the fact, that even though walls are drawn on
the track, there are actually no walls, and you will not complete a lap,
unless you complete the entire circuit without crossing the wall/line. |
Screenshot |
An inventive use of the Shoot-em-up-Construction-Kit, Armageddon Files,
has you playing a soldier, who is tasked with locating the documents for
the construction of Nuclear Weapons, and then escaping the complex, in
which they're stored. The inventive aspect is the utilisation of the second
player as an alternative sprite later in the game. |
Screenshot |
The first pure C64 game by Jeff Minter, is also another true classic.
With the earth under siege from gigantic mutated camels, you're the only
one who is able to stop them, before they trundle to the other side of
the map. Once a wave has been stopped, you must warp to the next sector
and battle more. Although eventually getting repetitve, the challenge of
avoiding the fire (which can randomly be semi-homing, or fully-homing)
will keep you on your toes. |
Centric Demo | Genre: | Arcade |
Released 1996 by Cyance | Rating: | 9.4/10 |
Screenshot |
A rather cool looking derivative of Tron, in Centric, you pilot one
of a few differing vehicle types, each possessing their own special capability,
and must be utilised in order to complete the task given for the level.
In this demo there are two levels, each using a differing vehicle. Overall,
a brilliantly designed and playable Tron clone. |
City Bomber | Genre: | Shoot-em-up |
Released 1995 by Visualise | Rating: | 8.7/10 |
Screenshot |
Initally looking like a remake of 'Blitz', City Bomber is a much more
developed game than the aforementioned classic. Your job is not just to
level the alien city, but also to rescue several hostages trapped down
on the surface. As well, you need good piloting skills in order to avoid
the barrage of SAM's launched in an attempt to stop you, and precise targetting
in order to hit the buildings without wounding hostages. Sadly, this also
is an unreleased title, and one, which would have done well. |
Cosmic Causeway [Disk][Tape] |
Genre: | Racing/Platform |
Released 1987 by Gremlin | Rating: | 8.7/10 |
Screenshot |
Another cool game from Mr.
Chip/Magnetic Fields, the sequel to Trailblazer (featured later
on this page!) drops the multi-player option, but adds powerups and more
speed! The basic idea of the game, being to complete the course in the
quickest time is still retained, but there are also some improvements &
enhancements (such as obstacles, not just the track to give you grief),
and enemy bosses later on. Note that the Tape version which is available
for download will only work with CCS64 or VICE 1.0, while the Disk version
is a cracked (plus trained and a hiscore saver) release. |
Crush | Genre: | Shoot `em up |
Released 1999 by Smash Designs | Rating: | 9/10 |
Screenshot |
The first proper release of 1999, and one heck of a good one! Based
on the classic Rainbow Arts game Katakis, Crush has you piloting
a prototype starfighter, in the last hope for mankind, from an alien threat
orbiting above the Earth. As is typical in this style of game, there's
plenty of Power-Ups and enemies to blast, and with a cool intro sequence,
and excellent graphics, make this release well worth downloading. |
Deflektor | Genre: | Puzzle |
Released 1987 by Vortex/Gremlin | Rating: | 9.3/10 |
Screenshot |
An original idea for a puzzler, Deflektor has you maniplulating mirrors,
in order to target the beam from a laser cannon onto an array of mines,
switches and blocks. The basic objective is to use the said laser cannon,
and by destroying the objects present in the level, open a wall to allow
access to a special switch. Neat graphics, and good control make this one
very well presented package. |
Dead Line Demo | Genre: | Shoot em Up |
Released 1994-5 by Visualise | Rating: | 9.1/10 |
Screenshot |
Based on the arcade classic Defender, the major twist with Deadline
is that you're now the one abducting the people, while the aliens try to
stop you. The scientists you have to rescue are trapped on an alien planet,
and cannot move for fear of death, so using your 'Tracer' droid, you must
transport them to a transporter platform, and from there they're able to
escape. Although, only a 1 level demo, if you're able to find this, get
it! |
Elite[Original C64 ][Enhanced] | Genre: | Space Sim |
Released 1985 by Firebird (Original BBC release in 1984 by Acornsoft) | Rating: | 9.95/10 |
Screenshot |
This is one of the best games ever, on any system. Another
BBC Micro port, Elite has you piloting a Cobra Mk3 craft, in which you
just have to make money, and show that you have what it takes to become
Elite! As well, this classic is freely distributable! Check out the official
Elite page at: here! |
Exile [Demo] | Genre: | Arcade Adventure |
Released 1991 by Audiogenic [Originally written by Superior Software,1986 [?]] | Rating | 9.4/10 |
Screenshot |
Like Elite, originally written on the BBC Micro [on which this is one
of the best games available], and this port of it is done briliantly (though
lacking the speech!). You are an astronaut, who is ordered onto a planet,
to rescue survivors, but once arrived, has a key piece of equipment stolen,
and your objective is to locate the piece of equipment, and save the survivors.
Also, this has a nice feeling of inertia, with your astronaut equipped
with a jet-pack, which can send him flying out of control until you master
it's uses. Unlike many other game demos, this demo, although using the
same map design as the full game, has slightly different gameplay. |
Frantic Freddie | Genre: | Platform |
Released 198? by Unknown (bad crack) | Rating: | 7.6/10 |
Screenshot
| A simple, enjoyable platform game, in which you need to collect a series of gems whilst avoiding a series of monsters. Whilst this game is very simplistic in graphics and design, you'll be frantically playing it for a long time! If anyone has a much better copy (showing original release info/publisher), please mail it to me. Note: Frantic Freddy will only run on VICE and CCS64 2.0 Beta, (it's ironic, a simple game needing a complex emulator to play it!). |
Screenshot |
Another unreleased game, Fuzzball, has you jumping around platforms,
in an attempt to stop other fuzzballs from carrying away several important
objects. Unlike many game demos, this has been trained, with an option
for infinite lives (very useful!). Even with the trainer, this game is
still bloody difficult! |
Gameboy Tetris | Genre: | Puzzle |
Released 199? by Unknown [PD release] | Rating: | 9/10 |
Screenshot |
A well designed conversion of the classic game, featuring a very well
drawn Game Boy image bouncing on the screen, and the playability of this
port is perfect. Well worth the 9kb download! Note: Hold down SHIFT (Shift-Lock
on a real machine!) to actually play the game! |
Hallax | Genre: | Breakout/Arkanoid Clone |
Released 1988 by Relax Designs (PD Release) | Rating: | 6.9/10 |
Screenshot
| A rather average clone of the classic Arkanoid, this game is enjoyable if only for a short time. One of the best things which this does have however, is a useful level designer (accessible by F3 on the title screen), giving you the ability to improve on the level design, (though I'm not 100% sure about saving levels though). |
Screenshot |
One heck of a classic game from the mind of Jeff Minter, 'Hover Bovver'
has you mowing lawns, but you've borrowed your neighbours' (much to his
dismay!), and now he's on the rampage! You have to mow the lawns, whilst
avoiding your neighbour, and making sure you don't hit the flowers sitting
on the lawn!) As well, Jeff has made his titles freeware, so why not grab
them from his page at: http://www.magicnet.net/~yak/. |
Screenshot |
A simple, well-presented blaster (with a title sounding like a puzzle
game!), Hummdinger has you flying around in your jet-pack and attempting
to collect bombs which are used (in some strange manner) to gain access
to the next level. This has very fast action, with crisp graphics, and
average audio! Enjoy! |
Kikstart [C64][C128
enhanced] | Genre: | Racing |
Released 1985 by Mastertronic | Rating: | 7.5/10 (C64), 8/10 (C128) |
Screenshot |
A delightfully simple concept, Kikstart puts you in the seat of a motorcycle,
and has you attempt to cross various courses (with obstacles including
semi-trailer trucks!). It is more difficult to grasp than it's sequel (probably
due to cyan background used in Player 1's display), and with only 8 tracks,
makes the C64 version a short-time hit. The C128 edition (a proper C128
game!), gives you a huge total of 24 tracks, and much more long-time fun!
Again, a warm thank-you to the people at Magnetic
Fields for also allowing this game's distribution! |
Screenshot |
A major improvement over its prequel (with better graphics, more tracks
and a few other improvements), Kikstart II is a simple concept, which is
executed brilliantly, with crisp graphics, and an enjoyable 2 player mode.
The basic action has you controlling a motorcycle over a dangerous array
of stunts including fire-jets and telephone boxes. Great gameplay, coupled
with an awesome, and simple track editor (which can produce tracks like
those in the game itself), make the fun last much longer than the original.
Many thanks go to the people at Magnetic
Fields for allowing the distribution of this gem! |
Screenshot |
An interesting strategy game, in Lazer Duel, you are given control
of a tank, and must be the first to wipe out your opponent. Sounds like
an action game? Wrong. In this, you need to place your tank at the correct
position on the screen to allow its beam to reflect off the various walls
and into your enemy! |
Laser Squad |
Genre: |
Strategy |
Released 1989 by Target Games |
Rating: |
9.4/10 |
Screenshot |
Although starting life on the ZX Spectrum (and possessing graphics
straight off one), Laser Squad, is easily one of the best turn-based combat
games available on the C64. With 7 detailed scenarios (the 7th being one
huge battle), and easy to learn controls, it'll take no time at all until
you're able to strategically guide your forces to victory! An excellent
game to play against the computer, Laser Squad is even better when played
against a friend, so you can watch your plans fall apart in that way. Thanks
go out to Mythos
Games for allowing the distribution of this |
Mission Monday |
Genre: |
Shoot-em-up |
Released 1988 by Digital Design |
Rating: |
9.4/10 |
Screenshot |
Something original for a change, with this game being a clone of Moon
Patrol, and as such, is very enjoyable to play. Your objective is to simply
drive through the forest and make it to the end of it. Although a clone,
this doesn't try to copy it exactly, but instead puts its own touch on
the game, with a mortar cannon being the armament, and the obstacle you
need to jump being walls, not craters. |
Screenshot |
Believe it or not, this is real. Mood is a one level (different for
both) work-in-progress release, with full screen graphics, and textures!
The only problem is that you need to reload it if you die, which isn't
much of a problem, considering it's size (80-90 blocks!). The differences
in the two releases are pretty impressive considering it was only about
6 months between them. If you're interested in the development of this,
you can check out their homepage here,
with more developed screen-shots (showing more weapons & levels), and
some cool demos to download. |
Screenshot |
One of the best Bomberman clones on the C64, this gem, has you bombing
penguins, who have caused the world to freeze. Unlike Bomberman, this has
enemies in eggs, which are hatched as the level progesses, but if are hit
by a bomb detonation, will prematurely hatch, and begin an uncontrolled
attack. |
Screenshot |
What appears to look like a clone of the coin-op classic Centipede,
is in reality a completely different game. Assigned to pilot a small pod,
you must simply survive on the grid (which is damaged by each enemy destroyed)
until the level's clock runs out. With the varied and fast attacking patterns
of the enemies, and the constant action, this is a very well designed and
programmed title, which will keep you engrossed for a very long period
of time. |
Screenshot |
A simple, but engrossing puzzler, in Reaxion you are tasked with deactivating
the control rods of several nuclear reactors, and must do it in a very
short time limit. In an tricky turn of events, when a rod is deactivated,
the surrounding rods become active, therefore you must work logically in
order to secure each level. |
Screenshot |
A straight Armalyte clone, Return of the Lions offers an enjoyable
blast, with high quality gameplay, and a huge varity of collectible powerups,
in your quest of destruction. |
Screenshot |
The sequel to the classic 'Attack of the Mutant Camels', has you piloting
one of the camels, and tasked with traversing through the 42 sectors, in
an attempt to simply just to survive. This also has some humourous touches,
with the strange enemies you battle, such as Candy Canes, and Telephone
Boxes!!! |
Tau Zero II |
Genre: |
SEUCK shoot 'em up |
Released 1989,92 by Alf Yngve |
Rating: |
9.3/10 |
Screenshot |
A great blaster from the SEUCK master himself! Tau Zero has very detailed
graphics (a rarity with SEUCK games), and well designed levels, with the
main objective being to just blast your way through everything (typical!).
Anyway, there's a fair number of levels to fight through and each is very
heavily packed with enemies, making this very enjoyable for a fair period. |
Terminal City |
Genre: |
Shoot-em-up |
Released 198? by Digital Design |
Rating: |
9/10 |
Screenshot |
Based on the ground section of the classic Parallax [and as an odd
tribute, the entire soundtrack is the original composition of Martin Galway]
, in Terminal City, you have been given the task to restore the 15 computers
located in a large city, by buying disks which must be inserted correctly
into each of the terminals. Again, this is a clear example of the simplicity
(and playability) of PD titles, and due to that, a good download. |
Trailblazer [C64][Plus 4/C16] |
Genre: |
Racing/Platform |
Released 1986 by Gremlin |
Rating: |
9/10 |
Screenshot (C64 version) |
The prequel to Cosmic Causeway, this simpler game, (although more fun
with multi-player opions), has you controlling a ball down a 3D road (sort
of like a 3D version of Bounder!), and whilst doing so, need to avoid the
various differing coloured squares and holes in the road. With the multi-player
options this is one you'll certainly play more, but after Cosmic Causeway
(which is fast) you just won't look at this the same way! |
Screenshot |
Based on the infamous 'Light-Cycle' part of the film, this has you
racing around a huge map, and your objective is simply to trap your opponent,
thereby causing him to crash. There's also a two-player version, in the
archive, which is a good challenge against a friend. |
Screenshot |
Unlike other horizontally scrolling blasters (where the emphasis is
on outright carnage), Warflame maintains a balance between the carnage
and skillful flying through a very challenging series of levels.
As well, it's very well designed and executed (execptionally clear graphics
and a very catchy tune in game), with a very well-pitched difficulty level,
leaving you grasping as you struggle to navigate the fighter down it's
escape path. |
