One of the most impressive aspect about the C64 and the 'Scene' is the demo. For those who don't know what a demo is, let me just say that they are 'shows' where the programmer's show off their skills on a system, and basically push the limits of programming. Anyway, here are a few which I enjoy because of the effects which are in action, or for the excellent design. Note that for watching these, the best solution is running them on a real C64, but if you're restricted to using an emulator, then CCS64, VICE or Frodo are your best bets. Anyway, enjoy the show!
Demo Name | Group and Year | Compatibility Issues | Comments |
Digital World | Coded by Samar in 1998 | In G64 disk images, also, will only run on CCS64 2.0 Beta | One of my favorites. Some awesome effects, which are fast (for a C64). |
Gold Runner | Coded by The Mean Team in ? | No problems, although if you're running an emulator on a slower system, you might get poor quality speech | A tribue (of sorts) to the Amiga/Atari ST game, with an interesting surprise. |
Holy Refuge | Coded by No Name in 1997 | No problems, although the jittering pictures are normal on emulators because of the weird effects which are performed. | Very impressive, my favorite part is the Landscape (reminds me of Comanche: Maximum Overkill on the PC) |
Second Reality | Coded by Smash Designs in 1997 | No problems except for the interlaced pictures. | One word: Mindblowing. IMO my personal favorite, especially since it originated on the PC. |
The Sidburners Collection [Vol.1][Vol. 2][Vol. 3][Vol. 4][Vol. 5] | Coded by Nostalgia in 1994-9 | Requires emulator with 1541 emulation | Excellent collection containing several thousand SID tunes all ready to load. |
Terminus | Coded by Drew Rodger in 1990 | No probs, although it might sound better with an emulator with SID filters. | Another of my favorites. Unlike others, this one movie-like in its presenation, and very well designed and coded. |
